Save the date for an eclectic workshop with Sarah Maria Griffin (1988), an award-winning Irish writer with a plethora of expertise! The two-day workshop will take place in the Gymnasium of Biel-Seeland. The workshop comprises overcoming cliché, poetry teaching, spoken-word performance and zine-making, but it also offers nonfiction modules which could tie into journalistic comprehension and composition. Griffin's qualifications include a Degree in English, Media & Cultural Studies as well as a Masters in Creative Writing.
Sarah Maria Griffin's first novel, Spare and Found Parts, was published by Titan Books & Greenwillow Books in Spring 2018 and was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards that year. Following this, her second, Other Words For Smoke, arrived in April 2019 and won the 2019 Irish Book Award Young Adult Fiction. Her collection of essays about the trials and tribulations of emigrating, Not Lost, reflects brilliantly the zeitgeist of a generation of Celtic Tiger Cubs fleeing the recession and was published by New Island Press in 2013.
Her nonfiction has appeared in The Stinging Fly, The Winter Papers, The Irish Times and The Guardian amongst other places: she held a podcasting column at the Irish Times, and a technology column at The Gloss, detailing her relationship with the internet. She regularly contributes to The Guardian's video games vertical with reviews and cultural analysis.
She was the recipient of an Arts Council Bursary for Literature in 2017, 2018, 2020, and in 2021 and is a winner of the European Science Fiction Chrysalis Award. for her Frankenstein-esque novel Spare and Found Parts which is set in a post-apocalyptic Dublin. Interestingly enough, her futuristic slant is one that is analogue in nature and not digital, taking the dystopian genre off the beaten track.
In 2021 she received an Arts Council Project award to undertake a national scale Zine Project with the Live Network of arts centres and venues. She was the Writer in Residence in Maynooth University in 2017/18, the DLR Writer In Residence in 2018/19. In 2019, she wrote the work of fiction that the Tomorrowland music festival in Belgium was themed around for that year. In 2021, she was the Edna O'Brien fellow for the Edna O'Brian Bursary at the Museum of Literature, Ireland. She currently lives at the foot of a mountain. She tweets @griffski, and is represented by DongWon Song at Morhaim Literary.
*Zines= self-published magazine of original images and texts which historically were in circulation to provide community for socially isolated groups. Zinesters draw inspiration from a "do-it-yourself" philosophy which emphasises a connection between creator and reader with the aim of joining communities.

Literature Live: New Perspectives on Theatre for the Classroom

This immersion course gives teachers of English the opportunity to experience cutting edge productions of classical and contemporary English language drama. Participants will read some of the key texts in advance. The course itself will take place at the Dublin Theatre Festival. In addition to the eight performances, there will be meetings with some of the directors and actors as well as formal and informal discussions. Now being offered for the ninth time, the course has proved very popular and inspired new approaches to drama in the classroom. The course is recognized by SATE (Swiss Teachers of English).
